Number, Please…

Last week I talked about the demographics of the area surrounding our church – it’s vital to know who you are trying to reach. What I didn’t mention was how easy it is to find that information.

Initially, I tried looking through census data but that takes a lot of time to simply find data that in turn, you’ll need to refine, especially if  your ministry covers multiple zip codes or town names. Then I stumbled on MinistryArea.com. Using reports compiled by the Percept Group Ministry Area makes finding the demographics of your area drop dead simple. It’s inexpensive as well.

9 Things: Book Review

School workWhile the majority of posts here will be about helping dads become better dads and helping ministry leaders figure out how to help dads become better dads, every once in a while I’ll share a resource that might fall into the category of ‘just for children’s ministry.’

This is one of those posts. If you’re a dad, you can keep reading to see some of the issues that your children or family minister may face and maybe even pick up a copy for them to help them as you team together to raise your children. (I’m giving a copy away, read on!)

Last week, while sitting with a friend in Starbucks (I’m a Caribou man myself) I finished reading Ryan Frank’s book, 9 Things They Didn’t Teach Me in College About Children’s Ministry. Despite the long name, the book is rather short – 9 chapters, 123 pages. It’s a quick read and its size lends itself well to being put in a backpack (or back pocket) and taken with you to read on the go.

Just weeks away from finishing a Children’s & Family Ministry degree at Bethel Seminary, I did learn many of the topics that are covered while I was ‘in college.’ But I think that’s unique. My journey included going to school with a group of people that were already doing ministry and many of these topics were covered in talks outside the classroom…and that’s what I like about this book.
